You can teach the kids to set up the tent in the backyard.  If they are old enough you can show them how to use some of the outdoor gear you purchased.  By having a sleep out in the back yard it will give every one a small taste of the real thing.  Get you self a magazine on the stars at the local new stand for the month you will be camping then you can look at the stars with the family.

You can even listen to the different night sounds.  Of course what you will hear depend on whether you live in a large city or a small town.  Be sure to teach the kids the proper use of the gear.  Get them used to the night and then they will have no fears when you head to you camp spot.Family Camping 

Plan the trip as a family camping trip.  Besides including the things you want to do make sure you include the things the rest of the family want to do too.  You will have to plan your meals and then pick up your groceries the day before you leave.  Pack all the equipment in the car or van the night before, and you'll be ready to head off on the family adventure first thing in the morning.

 

 Make sure you have all the gear and necessary cloths bug spray etc. Use glow stick and their favorite blankets and pillows to help get rid of any night time fears.  If the back yard camp out goes good the next trip will be the camping spot.


The kids will help with the chores if you make a game of it.  Have contests to see who can gather the most kindling for the campfire later that night, fastest camp clean up and the fastest tent organization .

Take hikes along the trails and by the lake in the morning in your town visit the information centers Get them use to being out and about.  Go on a flashlight scavenger hunt this will help them to get used to the dark
